These days, a storage unit can be used in so many more ways than just its original purpose, with one of its latest functions being architecture. Some have simply used the concept of storage units in their design, whereas some have upcycled storage units and incorporated them into their structure. Container City Creative Commons Image [Container City, London] This ultra modern and convenient riverside development in Trinity Buoy Wharf, London, takes its inspiration from Keetwonen, the largest container living area in the world. We particularly like this development, as rather than simply stacking the units on top of one another in a neat fashion, they have chosen to structure the buildings in a mismatched design. Bright vibrant colours and round windows add an even more unique additions to the modern design. Not only that, but the spaces can be altered to meet the needs of whoever wishes to use them. Container City has been used by many businesses for all kinds of requirements, including offices, studios, retail and education spaces. MDU (Mobile Dwelling Unit) Unlike Container City, the MDU has been designed using just one large storage unit. Its architect, Giulia Viggiani, made sure to remodel the unit in a way that would create an easily transportable but spacious living area. By taking some of the unit’s wall away, additional space could be added to the unit, that can be moved inwards and outwards, both for living in and transporting. The designer intended the MDU to be used for those who travel a lot, be it for their own enjoyment or for work requirements. Being able to easily move the MDU around, to then have a spacious living area to make the most of when settled in at your next destination, the concept of the MDU has upcycled a storage in a truly unique way. Starbucks Drive-Thru Storage Unit Branch The global company Starbucks are well known, not only for their delicious coffee, but for their recognisable branding, too. Walking past a Starbucks store, you can immediately tell that you are passing a Starbucks by the overall look of the store, and the delicious smell coming from it, of course. However, Starbucks decided to try out something entirely new to the company, by opening their first reclamation store made from storage units. Inspired by the many shipping containers that can be seen from its headquarters in Seattle, their unique branch consists of four containers that have been decorated to show the famous Starbucks branding. Starbucks’ architects and representatives have explained that this change of direction for the company is part of a new motion to encourage more environmentally friendly construction. Clinic in a Can is a medical company who specialise in redeveloping storage units into medical clinics that can be transported across the world, for countries in need of affordable healthcare. They currently have their unique storage unit clinics in a number of locations around the world, including South Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. Although these four designs are extremely unique ways of making use of storage units, many of us continue to use them for their original purpose.
